A KAYDE Surrey century has seen Beechworth Wanderers down Wangaratta Magpies in a clinical display during their A grade WDCA match at Norm Minns Oval on Saturday.
Beechworth opted to bowl first but the Magpies threw the first punch posting a strong 6/196 from their 40 overs with Nick Pell (37 not out), Ryan Malcolm (35) and Charlie Stafford (35) leading the charge.
The Wanderers would’ve been seen as underdogs to chase the Magpies’ total down, but a 107 run knock from 99 balls for Surrey was the catalyst for the successful chase.
He blasted 10 boundaries, three of those being maximums on his way to a match-winning display, teaming up with Clancy Ellett (27) for an 81-run opening stand.
The veteran wasn’t forced to do it all himself though with Campbell Fendyk making a more than handy 48 at number three.
Wanderers captain Brenton Surrey said it was a great win, particularly after a poor start.
“We bowled 26 wides and went for a lot of boundaries so we weren’t particularly happy with our performance with the ball,” Surrey said.
“We’d bowl three or four good balls an over, then we’d bowl a wide or go for a boundary.
“It’s quite unusual for us to be that untidy with the ball because usually we’ve got a good handle on our bowling but the first two games we haven’t quite managed to get going.
“We missed that first game up at Mansfield and maybe teams are a little bit ahead of us but our bowling cost us last weekend against City Colts and we were staring down the barrel of 200 this weekend.”
Surrey admitted there would’ve been a few players who saw 197 for victory as a stretch.
“I don’t think there were a lot who thought we could win and on the other hand ‘Maggies’ might’ve thought they just had to bowl and field half decent to win,” he said.
“Kayde and Clancy got us off to a good start and if we were going to have any chance of winning that needed to happen.
“Those two were going at a run a ball for eight or nine overs and then when Cam (Fendyk) came in he did the same.
“Poor Kayde was running lots of twos and threes, they even ran two on the keeper at one stage so our running between the wickets was tremendous.”
Surrey was all praise for his brother Kayde.
“We need our leaders to stand up this season and that’s exactly what Kayde did,” Surrey said.
“He popped his shoulder out playing footy so he isn’t able to bowl so from him we just need his leadership and batting.
“It was definitely one of the better hundreds I've seen against a pretty strong Magpies bowling attack.”
