IT'S do or die for the top ranked WDCA Beechworth women when they take on the number two side Shepparton on Sunday in a very special home game at Baarmutha Park.
The Wanderers are six points clear on top of the Goulburn Murray Cricket women's A grade ladder, but with a bye next week in the final round of the regular season, and with Echuca and Shepparton snapping at their heels, the match will determine whether they play finals cricket.
"It's pretty much a must–win for us to keep our finals chances alive, because Echuca are hot on our tails," opening bat Alex Randell said.
"Echuca need to win the next two games and they're certainly capable of doing it, and they'll pip us if we don't beat Shepparton, but Shepparton has never really been an easy game to win – they always give us a good challenge."
For Randell, being able to play on the turf in the club's home town carries special significance.
"I haven't played there in forever, so it will be good to get back to the old grassroots kind of thing," she said.
"I'm a bit nostalgic about it – I think the last time I got to do this I was 16, so it's been a number of years.
"I thought I would have to give up playing women's cricket, so being able to come back to grassroots, back to where I was when I was 16, it's amazing.
"It's really weird being the senior player now, playing with the juniors – it's like a role reversal."
Before the T/20 kicks off at 12pm, the squad will host a come–and–try day from 10.30am at Baarmutha Park, to give women of all ages the chance to pick up a bat and try their hand at cricket.
Also making an appearance at the match will be members from the original Beechworth Lady Wanderers cricket squad, first formed in the 2000/01 season.
Randell said no matter the result, she counts the season as a success with a great team around her.
"Even if we don't get the win, I think we've had a great season even with all the COVID and the rain," she said.
"They're a great bunch of girls, so hopefully next season we can come back just as strong and rise to the challenge again.
"That's probably the best thing with our team, we've got the older, experienced people who are great at coaching, and we've got a couple of newbies.
"If you're brand new at cricket or even an oldie returning, it's such a great mix of a team."
