EXCITED youngsters at St Joseph’s Primary School in Beechworth began their primary education journey last Friday.

Principal Carly Avery said the Foundation students settled into the day well with big smiles, excited to see their year 6 buddies.

“The transition process at St. Joseph's over a series of sessions in Term 4 the year before always mean that they are familiar with the environment, their teacher and year 6 buddies,” she said,

Ms Avery said the school’s buddy system is a key part of the transition process for all students involved.

“It creates connection across the school, gives year 6 students the opportunity to be leaders, share their experiences and brings out their caring and nurturing skills,” she said.

“For our foundation students it gives them an anchor, someone to help and support them in the mornings and in the playground at break times, which early on can seem so big.

“They started the day learning the morning routine of unpacking bags, lining up, marking the roll and morning prayer.

“Throughout the day a range of activities continued the process of getting to know each other and feeling safe and comfortable in the school environment."

Ms Avery said for staff and students alike, it was a privilege to watch foundation students become more confident, grow academically and develop their personalities.

“They are an important part of the St. Joseph's community,” she said.
