SELF-professed “running fanatic” David Jefferies will lead his fellow accountants down the freeway in March, as the team of four from Wodonga tackles the Wangaratta Chronicle Marathon and Fun Run.
Leading 'Team Stewart, Tracy and Mylon Accountants', the 53-year-old will aim to complete a sub-two hour half marathon while competing in the March 17 event for the third consecutive year, while teammate Lauren Scott has her sights on a sub-four hour marathon.
The team is rounded out by Michael Box, a footballer who has used the event as an excuse to ramp up his training, and Yogendra ‘Yogi’ Rai, who joined the firm from Malaysia, with both members to complete the 10km run.
Mr Jefferies said he and Ms Scott regularly ran more than 50km a week while tackling a number of running events throughout the year.
“We come from a firm of about 30 people, and myself and Lauren, we try and keep the staff motivated with fitness,” he said.
“For the last three years I’ve done the half marathon – Wangaratta is a really good run and I really enjoy it.
“I’m not keen on doing the marathon because of the weather, (in March) it can be either really cool or it can be really hot, but the half marathon is a top course so I highly recommend it.”
Ms Scott is fresh off a time of three hours and 59 minutes in the Melbourne Marathon held in October, with an eye to making further improvements during her local race.
Mr Jefferies said the Wangaratta event was popular among the border running fraternity, with many lamenting Albury Wodonga’s lack of a marquee event.
“You would think Albury Wodonga would have a really good half marathon or marathon up here, but there’s not and that’s what frustrates me,” he said.
“The Wangaratta event seems very consistent so that’s why I’m drawn to the event – it’s a good crowd down there and I know quite a lot of people from the Albury Wodonga Triathlon Club which I’ve been a member of for a very long time, and they go down there and do it.
“I like the fact that it’s an out and back track and you can see other runners coming back as well.
“I just find it’s a very positive event, everyone’s happy down there – you’re at the course and everyone’s high-fiving each other and getting excited about it, it’s a good community event and that’s what I like.
“We’re just happy to be involved with the event and support the running community in general.”
