Outstanding service to the Rutherglen community by longtime resident Carol Fursdon was recognised at the recent Australia Day celebrations held in the town’s Lions Park.
Carol was presented with the Indigo Shire’s Town and District Citizen of the Year award for Rutherglen by shire councillor Roberta Horne.
“I was humbled but proud to be recognised,” she said.
Living in Rutherglen for the last 40 years, Carol said she has been a volunteer since her daughters started school.
“I've always put my hand up to help with activities in and around the community,” she said.
Carol has helped at the local swimming club, toy library and kindergarten for three-year olds.
The longtime volunteer manages the Anglican Op Shop in Rutherglen which she says draws customers from afar.
“I am also involved with the Rutherglen Golf Club, and we are growing fast with the help of a band of volunteers, holding community events at the club year-round,” she said.
Carol said she loves volunteering as there is a huge need for volunteers in every small town.
“It’s usually the same group of dedicated people who put their hands up to make their town a better place and help those in need,” she said.
“Volunteers are silent helpers always with a smile and happy to help.”
The dedicated volunteer’s involvement with the Anglican church had also led her to a 30-year commitment in helping with local and successful debutante balls before they moved to another committee due to COVID-19.
This year’s guest speakers - Rutherglen High School captains Jessica Hawkey and Jazmyn Slaven - delivered a speech about their perspectives on Australia Day and what the day meant to them.
