CHRISTMAS spirit is alive and well with a dedicated Beechworth team set to provide a community lunch on Christmas Day at the town's Memorial Servicemen's Hall.
Plans are well underway by an organising committee with a representative from Beechworth Health Service, Indigo Shire Council, the Salvation Army, Quercus Beechworth and the community to help create a special day for locals with the help of other volunteers.
Options will be available for a sit–down meal subject to COVID–safe guidelines in the memorial hall, a cold takeaway hamper or to have delivered if unable to collect.
Long–time coordinator and community representative of 12 years, Christine Cansfield–Smith, said the sit–down lunch is a relaxed, friendly and fun time.
"By the end of the day almost everyone has joined in, found a new friend, or had a chance to catch up with others," she said.
"It's a time where it really feels like the community brings us all together.
"The day is an example of the true spirit of Christmas which is to share, give love and friendship to each other and to people who you may not know but who are deserving of kindness at this time of year."
With a callout for volunteers to again help on the day, Christine said volunteers dedicated their time to help give enjoyment to others.
The coordinator said she would never miss a beat for the day.
"I love doing what I do in the role because it is to me, the essence of what Christmas Day and the festive aeason is all about."
Christine said she loved working with the team, where they all worked hard to make the Christmas event happen each year.
The Memorial Hall will be decked out with Christmas decorations provided every year by local schools and other groups.
Beechworth Health Service's Health (BHS) Promotion and Community Engagement officer, Gabriella Tange, said providing something special at Christmas is important in supporting community connections.
With the callout for volunteers to help, Gabriella said the committee was seeking volunteers to get on board earlier this year to ensure timely registration.
"It's great to still be able to offer a sit–down option for the community and to ensure that people aren't having Christmas on their own," she said.
"Those who have helped us in the past with assistance such as donations have also helped to make the day happen.
"We couldn't run the event without their support as well as from our wonderful volunteers."
Takeaway meal collections are on Sunday December 25 from 11am –11.45am while a dine in meal where seat registration is needed is from 12.15pm to 2.30pm
RSVP to BHS on (03) 5728 0200 by Friday, December 16, with volunteer enquriries able to made to the same number.
