A new community-led initiative has launched to explore the potential of an independent Victorian state election candidate for Benambra.
Community for Benambra emerged from conversations among local residents who felt there was a growing disconnect between the community and political decision-making.
Group representative and local businessman Brett Emo said Community for Benambra aims to bring the community together to push for better outcomes for our region, with the goal of facilitating a selection process for an independent candidate.
“Many people feel their voices aren’t being heard,” he said.
“This group was formed by locals who want to create a respectful, inclusive space where the community can shape the future of our electorate.”
After nearly 20 years representing the Benambra community, Bill Tilley will not be contesting to retain his seat, with the Liberal Party choosing Wodonga local Steve Martin as their preferred candidate for the 2026 election.
Alex Nelson from Community for Benambra said the initiative was motivated by concerns about representation, major local issues, and the health of democracy itself.
“Important state government decisions - particularly around hospital services, regional development and transport - too often appear to be made without meaningful input from the people who are most affected,” she said.
“We need representation that is accountable to the community, not political bosses in Spring Street.”
Benambra covers a diverse region in north-east Victoria, including Wodonga, Yackandandah, Beechworth, Corryong, Chiltern, Tallangatta, the Kiewa and Indigo Valleys, and surrounding rural communities.
