Well–known local couple seek seachange

A WELL–KNOWN couple entrenched in Beechworth community life for close to 20 years has headed south to the village of Mt Martha on the scenic Mornington Peninsula.

Gail and Terry Walsh, originally from Melbourne, had moved to Beechworth for a tree change – a change to a very different lifestyle and working arrangement for the pair.

"We were in our early 50s and decided to spend our last remaining working years together, running a bed and breakfast – Kinross B&B in Loch Street for almost 10 years," Terry said.

"Because we loved the town and its people, and had become enmeshed in many clubs and organisations, we decided to stay on after we sold the B&B business."

The couple said it had been time to return south to be closer to family – their kids, grandkids and siblings.

Recognising a need to downsize to a more manageable home, Terry and Gail said Mount Martha was an ideal location where they could continue to live a relaxed, secure lifestyle in an area abounding in recreational activities, with hospital and medical support nearby as they get older.

"We have made many lasting friendships over the past two decades and will miss Beechworth – a town that has so much to offer," Terry said.

"Apart from its rich history and natural beauty it offers all residents ample opportunity to become connected, socialise and engage in many activities by joining various clubs and community organisations."

Proactive community members and volunteers over their time living in Beechworth, Terry had executive roles in the local RSL Sub–Branch, Legacy, Rotary, Probus, Senior Citizens Club, croquet club, memorial hall committee, Beechworth Cemetery Trust, Friends of the Burke Museum, chamber of commerce, festival committees, and had performed duties as a Justice of the Peace.

Gail had supported and joined Terry in all of his activities while she had been a keen member of the Beechworth CWA and a committee member of both the senior citizens and croquet clubs.

"Our fondest memories of Beechworth will be the warmth, friendliness and caring nature of its people," Terry said.

"Although we lived only a few minutes' walk from the centre of town, we had to allow an hour just to pick up a litre of milk and loaf of bread stopping every so often to chat with someone we bumped into!

"From day one we were made to feel welcome in town and more so when we became involved in the community.

"Our message to all newcomers to Beechworth is to become part of the community by joining and contributing to one or more of its many and varied organisations.

"You will be doing yourself a great favour."
