BEECHWORTH'S Andrew Davison has returned from the Blokarting World Championships with a third place finish in the production light weight division.

The world championships were held at Feilding in New Zealand with 130 entries from many countries including Australia, France, Spain, England, Bermuda and Denmark.

High speeds and winds proved an entertaining spectacle over five days at Sanson near Palmerston.

Davison, who is commodore of the North East Windsport Club located at Springhurst, said it was a memorable week.

"It was a terrific week," Davison said.

"One day there wasn't enough wind to sail and another it was really strong so we all had a lot of trouble keeping the karts upright but the rest of the time we were able to race nicely.

"I went into the championships just not wanting to finish last, I've been to Australian championships before and not done so well so it was a bit of a surprise to do as well as I did."

Davison was one of seven Australians at the world championships and one of three from the North East Windsport Club.

The North East's Mike Reid and Simon Percer also attended the championship.

"There were seven Australians there and we were actually the best represented country there," Davison said.

"Bryn Wooding from Queensland won his division and Greg Devins from South Australia finished third in his so we had some success."

Blokarts can reach speeds up to 75kph and, with no brakes, it's a sport definitely not for the faint–hearted.

"I just loved the speed," Davison said.

"You can get up to 75kph and with no brakes it's definitely exhilarating.

"When you start getting good you can lift wheels – it's like motorsport when they drift around corners.

"The best part is it isn't too expensive and you can take your kart out of the shed and be sailing in no time."

Davison now has his eyes fixed on the Australian championships which will be held in Perth in February.
