BEECHWORTH’S senior football side face a potential eight-point swing game early in the season as they look to celebrate a club legend.
Brenton Surrey’s 300th senior game will be set to an epic backdrop, as his Bushrangers take on flag heavy weights Kiewa-Sandy Creek at Baarmutha Park tomorrow.
The Bushrangers are coming off a massive win against Dederang-Mounty Beauty, with scores reading 38.27 (255) to 2.1 (13).
After a slow start to the year, key forward Lachie Armstrong had a day out kicking 11 goals and had plenty of support in the likes of Hunter North (nine goals) and Connor Stone (five goals).
New recruits Tristan Lenaz and Lukas Jakobsson also showed out to be named among the side’s best.
Coach Tom Cartledge said it was an ideal preparation for a blockbuster early season game with the Hawks.
“It was a solid hit-out, the boys played quite well across four quarters, they didn’t get selfish or carried away,” he said.
“The group is really starting to settle together and gel, and the results are starting to speak for themselves.
“This is really an eight-point game for us against Kiewa, because they’re third and we’re second at the moment, so if we can get a nice early break on them it could be the difference come the end of August.”
The Hawks are coming off a big scare against Rutherglen, kicking 10.20 in their 18-point win in Cats territory, after trailing at three-quarter-time.
Both teams' only blemish through four games this season has been against Chiltern, as they sit behind the reigning premiers on the ladder.
But the match will carry an extra special occasion for the club as Surrey, one of the last remaining team members of the 2010 premiership side, hits the field for the 300th time in the senior red and blue.
A former senior coach of the side and 2011 Barton Medal winner, Cartledge said it would be only fitting to cap off the day with a win for the milestone man.
“We’ve been super lucky to have ‘Grub’, he’s so loyal and dedicated to the club," he said.
"It’s a real testament to the place and the legacy he’ll leave behind when he finally hangs up the boots.
“If everyone had his mentality of thick and thin and good or bad, then the club would be even greater again.
“You can’t replace guys like Brenton and hopefully he’s got a couple more years running around left.”
