Cream of crop at Wangaratta

THE 2022 Blue Ribbon Weaner Sale at Wangaratta this week is expecting to have yardings of 6100 steers and 2100 heifers, drawing vendors and buyers from across Australia.

Some of the best bloodlines in the country will be up for auction at the Wangaratta Livestock Exchange with the steers on sale from 10.30am Wednesday and heifers at the same time on Friday.

Top Wooragee producer Robin Warner from Danetree Hereford stud will be selling 50 Hereford steers and 20 Hereford heifers which will be highly sought after.

Mr Warner has repeat buyers for his cattle with the Danetree Hereford performing well with weight gain and he said they're a quite animal which also helps with putting the kilos on.

"The cattle are almost 10 months old and they were weaned on January 12 and given them two lots of drenches," he said.

"There will be two pens for the steers with one around 330kg and the other at 380kg and the heifers will be around the 300kg."

Mr Warner complimented the set up at the Wangaratta Livestock Exchange which is preceded by its reputation as a brilliant saleyard venue for store cattle.

"They are really good yards at Wangaratta and this time of year suits the timing of my breeding program," he said.

"I have sold through Wangaratta's blue ribbon sale a few times before and last year my cattle did well in terms of price.

"They draw a lot of cattle to this blue ribbon sale and they've got a good reputation and the heifers go well on the Friday too."

Mr Warner spoke of the high demand for heifers at the moment for breeding as there is a nationwide shortage of females.

"A lot of the black females are going north and a heifer used to go into feedlots but now they're going into breeding," he said.
