Local community digs in for National Tree Day

AROUND 40 local Landcare and community members dug in for the annual National Tree Day planting on Sunday, delayed for two weeks by COVID restrictions until eased for regional Victoria.

Carrying on a volunteer tradition of regenerating 'The Glades' near Lake Sambell's Sandy Beach, Beechworth Urban Landcare and Sustainability (BULS) group members and locals put in place 300 understory plants.

BULS member Nicki Munro said 30 years ago the area had been a pine forest with blackberries underneath before the trees were felled.

"Like the group of volunteers here today, they designed and planted out this entire section called 'The Glades' which is now popular," she said.

Ms Munro said trees planted over the years had grown large with very little undergrowth and a variety of plants were put in including kangaroo apple, native grasses such as kangaroo and wallaby, chocolate lilies and 'egg and bacon' shrubs

"Indigo Shire paid for the plants as they have been supporting National Tree Day for quite a few years," she said.

"Today is a community planting for Beechworth managed by BULS with support from Beechworth Honey who developed the flyer for us and hosted our morning tea."

BULS president Dr Helen Robinson said multiple benefits for National Tree Day included the community coming together in Beechworth who made positive contributions by helping to increase biodiversity and restore habitat.
