Kicking goals for sport in Beechworth and surrounds

ADAM Fendyk is Beechworth born and bred and has spent most of his life in the town apart from around seven years away in Shepparton and Deniliquin on the Riverina plains with his family.

"However the hills of Beechworth always felt like home, so a move back was always on the cards and I'm glad we did," he said.

What's your job?

I am general manager of Burder AgAttachments, an engineering and manufacturing company based in Wangaratta which specialises in the design, manufacture and wholesale of front end loaders, forklifts and attachments for tractors.

What brought you to this role?

The business is family owned and operated.

I was giving my Dad all this advice on how he should run the company and then decided that perhaps I should put my words into actions.

I stepped into the breach 16 years ago and crikey have learnt a lot!

What do you love about your job?

We make things! The team is around 60 people strong, so I have a great sense of pride when I see one of our locally manufactured products in the field, especially knowing all of the people and incredible skills that went into making the item.

What do you do in the community?

I am currently president of the Beechworth Football and Netball Club (BFNC).

This is my second stint, so I must be a bit crazy.

All jokes aside, I enjoy working with a great group of volunteers in order to deliver sport to Beechworth and surrounds.

The club not only organises netball and football – this year our team organised and delivered the Easter Saturday Fun Run for the benefit of the town and participants.

What's the most important current community issue for you?

I believe that participation in sporting and physical activities is critical to our well–being.

Junior participation and retention rates have been particularly impacted after the lockdowns and disruptions over the past few years.

This however is not limited to juniors.

What would you do to solve, change or improve that situation?

The BFNC endeavours to provide a place where people want to be.

To have fun, get fit and learn new skills, to participate in team sport and get to know people.

I would encourage more people to come on down to the club and have some fun.

What's the most important current world issue for you?

The global COVID recovery is proving to be troublesome but for me today (ironically) it is access to water.

If the person you would most like to meet came to Indigo, or was already here, who would that be and what would you show them?

I would take my business associate Gerben from the Netherlands to Mount Stanley.

Why would you show him that?

I really appreciate the enjoyment he gets when he drives up and down hills. Something we take for granted!

And the view from the top on a clear day is stunning.

What book are you reading?

'Still' by Matt Nable. A murder intrigue set in Darwin in the early 60s, seemingly dealing with many of today's social issues.
