Outstanding achievers celebrated with Australia Day honours

BEECHWORTH'S Chris Dormer has been named Indigo Shire's Citizen of the Year, while 24-year-old Kurt Sorenson was honoured as Indigo Shire's Young Citizen of the Year at a ceremony in Chiltern earlier today.

Beechworth’s Reuben Pfahlert was also recognised as one of a host of high achievers across the shire as part of Indigo Shire's Australia Day awards initiative, taking home the Emma George Junior Sporting Scholarship.

On behalf of the shire, Cr Sue Gold presented Chris and Reuben with their awards at Beechworth’s Australia Day ceremony and celebrations held in the town’s Serviceman’s Memorial Hall on Friday morning.

Chris’s award recognises her significant contribution to both the Beechworth and Stanley communities over many years.

She has worked tirelessly as a member of many groups and their committees including the Stanley Athenaeum, Stanley Cemetery Trust, Beechworth Arts Council, Stanley Hall Committee, Murray Museum group, Beechworth Senior Citizens, Beechworth Exercise Activity and Training Group (BEAT), Green Fingers gardening group and the Mechanics Institute Melbourne

Kurt is an active and inspiring member of the Chiltern CFA, having joined as a junior member as an 11-year-old.

He recently took on the role of training coordinator and 2nd Lieutenant and has led the Chiltern Junior Fire Brigade team for around the last three years.

With a love of mountain bike riding since he was six years old before joining the Beechworth Chain Gang club, Reuben has had an incredible journey regularly competing in state and national Enduro and downhill series events with wins and placements.

The $1000 award will help him achieve his sporting goals.

Congratulations also go to other wonderful outstanding achievers around the shire recognised in today’s Indigo Shire Australia Day awards.

Award recipients are Joelene Humphrey - Kiewa Tangambalanga and District Certificate of Achievement, Julie Simpson – Rutherglen and District Certificate of Achievement, Colin Harkin - Barnawartha and District Certificate of Achievement and Valma Chenoweth - Chiltern District Certificate of Achievement
