BEECHWORTH Urban Landcare and Sustainability (BULS) is thrilled to be among six local finalists with projects entered into this year's Keep Victoria Beautiful (KVB) Sustainable Communities - Tidy Town awards.
With its Beechworth Bush Botanic Gardens project in the running for first place in the KVB's environment category, BULS Nicki Munro said the opportunity as an entry in the award program showcased how people can have a well-designed native garden.
"This is a celebration of native gardens and if we can encourage people to have them, then that's a really good thing for our biodiversity," she said.
"It's a designed native garden - not revegetation – to celebrate our local indigenous native plants."
Ms Munro said innovative project creator Ali Garnett together with Ms Bould had driven the initiative.
A public garden for all to enjoy, BULS' member Ms Bould said the community including children could wander through and see identified plants in the garden.
Ms Munro said BULS three years ago received $6000 funded by the Victorian Government through DELWP's statewide 'biodiversity on ground action plant' grant as well as receiving Indigo Shire Council support.
Ms Bould has also crafted nine mosaics positioned around the garden which capture the area's beautiful birdlife.
"A dedicated small group of BULS volunteers have regularly met to create the native garden," she said.
