A call to the community to help with appeal

THE BEECHWORTH Salvation Army is asking for more community involvement during this year's Red Shield Appeal starting on Saturday, May 28.

The Beechworth based Salvos have helped communities across Alpine and Indigo Shires, supporting locals in need since 1884.

After a tough few years, Salvation Army officer Pauline Middleton said many are still feeling the impacts of COVID–19, rental stress, mental health, and cost of living pressure.

"We're so grateful to the community in the North East who have always rallied together and supported the Red Shield Appeal every year," she said.

"This year is no different – we need the help of community members more than ever as we continue to support those who are experiencing great need, isolation, or mental health crises."

The local funds from the 2021 Red Shield Appeal were used to help support a winter school program and help struggling families send young people on school excursions.

"The needs are far greater to what we can meet, and the support from anyone in the community who can help," she said.

According to the 2021 Salvation Army annual report, approximately 887,500 crisis beds are provided to people experiencing homelessness, while three people are supported by the salvos every minute.
